Against the Prompt-Tool Aesthetic

What this means for you

Choco HQ refuses the visual default of every prompt tool shipped since 2023. The category-reflex pull is dark navy, electric-blue accent, and a gradient hero. Choco HQ runs warm off-white paper, a single oxblood accent earned by use on no more than 5% of the viewport, and zero gradients. The visual signal that this is different infrastructure has to come from making visibly different choices, not from a tagline that asserts difference.

The pitch

The reference register is Sigstore, Tailscale, Stripe Docs, and Linear. The anti-reference register is named, by category, in PRODUCT.md: generic AI-tool dark blue, Web3 crypto neon, marketing-SaaS template, and glassmorphic Stripe-clone. Every surface has to be visibly distinguishable from all four.

The designer or product reviewer about to add a gradient, a hero metric grid, or a frosted-glass card to a Choco HQ surface.

Proof points

• The Earned Accent Rule: oxblood oklch(38% 0.12 25) appears on at most 5% of any rendered viewport, locked at P0.3 (2026-04-30), measured contrast 9.71:1 against Paper
• The No-Gradient Rule: solid color only; no linear gradients on backgrounds, buttons, or text; no mesh gradients; no background-clip: text with a colored fill
• Status-Plus-Glyph Rule: no status is encoded by color alone; verified is accent + check, blocked is ink + slash, pending is hairline + dot, so grayscale screenshots retain meaning
• Anti-references are named in PRODUCT.md with the visual tells that disqualify each: dark navy + electric blue (AI-tool default), holographic gradient (Web3), three-up icon cards + testimonial strip (marketing-SaaS), frosted glass + pastel mesh (fintech glass)
