Modernising the Category, Not the Aesthetic

What this means for you

Two failure modes bracket this category. On one side, the legacy requirements tools: DOORS, Polarion, Jama. Windows-95-grade density, hierarchical trees that hide information, every action three menus deep. On the other side, the SaaS-cliché reaction to those tools: gradient hero metrics, identical card grids, decorative glassmorphism. Traceo modernises the first without becoming the second.

The pitch

Resemblance to legacy RM is regression. Resemblance to a generic admin dashboard is unserious. Both groups of buyers can spot the failure mode in five seconds. The way out is restraint, not novelty: graphite chrome, one ember accent used rarely, redundant encoding for every state, keyboard as the default UI rather than a power-user flag.

Who it’s for

The buyer comparing Traceo to an incumbent on a procurement spreadsheet, and the engineer comparing it to whatever spec tool their last team built on top of Notion or Linear.

Proof points

  • Three anti-references are written down in PRODUCT.md: legacy RM tools, SaaS-cliché dashboards, generic Jira and Confluence enterprise UI. Each comes with a one-line failure-mode tag.
  • The design system explicitly rejects “Linear-clone aesthetics”, “gradient hero metrics”, and “identical card grids” as failure modes
  • The brand color appears on no more than ten percent of any screen; pure white is forbidden as a surface; gradients are forbidden in headers
  • Every state, link type, and severity is encoded redundantly with color plus shape plus label, so the system survives colorblind users, low-contrast displays, and procurement-grade audits
